Positive Parenting
This series of classes will introduce parents to
skills needed for responsive, positive parenting. This approach to
responsive parenting teaches the skills of calming the body while
awakening the whole mind. The application of these skills will assist
the parent in moving from reactive behavior to responsive behavior.
They will be introduced to communication styles based on different
ways of taking in information and making decisions. They will learn
positive approaches in the use of language, non-verbal behavior and
physical touch. The parent finds the safe place within him/herself
and learns to create a safe and nurturing environment for his/her
child. Participants will identify mentors and learned behaviors from
the family of origin. Parents will begin to discern between constructive
and destructive parenting behaviors learned from family, extended
family and community models. They will begin to create a personal
model of parenting from mentors and models, as well as from their
own experience and learning. They will identify specific parenting
goals and write an action plan.
